Field Investigation & Analysis

Our firm is highly experienced in conducting field investigations and specialty inspections to provide specific corrosion control recommendations on various types of structures including water transmission and distribution pipelines, water storage tanks, water treatment plant structures, as well as raw water facilities. Our field investigation and analysis experience includes the following:

  • Inspecting structures and investigating corrosion related leaks
  • Monitoring rectifier stations
  • Analyzing corrosion products
  • Analyzing coating failures and inspecting coating applications
  • Recommending additional test stations for purposes of stray current monitoring and control
  • Performing various soil tests
  • Conducting close internal potential surveys
  • Recommending installation of IR drop free test stations in critical locations
  • Performing surveys of cathodic protection systems for pipelines, reservoirs and tanks
  • Preparing cathodic protection and stray current survey reports
  • Preparing cost estimates for recommended remedial action
  • Evaluating engineered cathodic protection and corrosion control systems

We are also able to provide the following services to support the above work:

  • Controlling traffic control for inspections and excavations
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Operating and maintaining test equipment
  • Testing and repairing rectifiers
  • Facilitating the of pipelines an other structures by bringing safety equipment and techniques
  • Providing a risk assessment matrix
  • Estimate the extent of corrosion to pipelines and identify and rank those which are susceptible to failure
  • Identify the degree of improvements necessary – replacement, repair, restoration of cathodic protection, etc.
  • Provide a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed improvements
  • Assessing the condition of pipes, valves, fittings, and other components. This includes estimating the condition pipes in between test locations
  • Providing a summary of finding with appropriate drawings or maps to identify locations
  • Providing mitigation measures to prevent further corrosion
  • Providing repair alternatives or replacement recommendations
  • Preparing budget level estimates

Corrosion Control Engineering

We are experienced in the preparation of detailed installation drawings and technical specifications for the implementation of corrosion control both to existing, and to new structures and pipelines suitable for bidding purposes. Our corrosion control engineering experience includes the following:

  • Preparing cathodic protections designs
  • Recommending the use of specific corrosion resistant materials
  • Locating AC power sources for rectifiers
  • Selecting ground bed locations
  • Preparing coating specifications for new structures as well as for repair and replacement
  • Preparing detailed cost estimates including:
  • Cost benefit analyses
  • Value engineering
  • Budgeting for capital projects
  • Providing review comments for SFPUC designs and specifications
  • Providing a system checkout – energization and adjustment following system installation
  • Preparing “as-built” drawings and Operations and Maintenance Manuals for systems
  • Providing technical reports and reviewing technical memorandums to insure that the corrosion control strategy is incorporated for risk management in the SFPUC corrosion control program
  • Providing support to SFPUC staff and others in documenting risk assessment

Specialty Testing Services

We are also trained in specialty testing services as follows:

  • DCVG and ACVG surveys
  • Remote field eddy current testing
  • UT measurements including D-meter and B-scan
  • Coating integrity testing using DCVG and C-scan surveys
  • Stray DC and AC current testing
  • Appropriate training for city personnel
  • Expert witness for litigation support
  • In-situ and lab soil thermal resistivity testing per ASTM D5334 and IEEE Standard 442
